Bodie Island Lighthouse is pronounced as "Body Island Lighthouse." This 156-foot tall, black & white striped Lighthouse was first lit on October 1st, 1872. The bright light of the Bodie Island Lighthouse can be seen up to 18 miles away at night.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse that you see today is the third Lighthouse built on Bodie Island. The first Bodie Island Lighthouse had a foundation problem that caused the Lighthouse to lean & was not repairable. The Confederates blew up the second Bodie Island Lighthouse during the Civil War to avoid its capture by the Union.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is managed & maintained by the US National Park Service.

You may choose to collect information about Bodie Island Lighthouse and the other four Outer Banks Lighthouses at the Whalebone Junction Information Center near the entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore on US Hwy 12 at Whalebone Junction. Bodie Island Lighthouse is located in South Nags Head on the Westside of US Hwy 12.
