Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc

The Animal Lovers Assistance League was founded in 2005 as a non-profit organization by a group of Currituck residents who wanted to improve the animal care and operating practices at the Currituck Animal Shelter.

 On July 1, 2005, succeeded the Currituck Humane Society as the operators of the Shelter. The League is dedicated to:

 The prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and providing humane education; 

Work in cooperation with the county to prevent suffering and cruelty to all animals both domestic and wild;

Provide outreach programs for Currituck, Camden, and Dare counties and a program for adoption of animals at the Animal Shelter in Currituck County according to approved standards and guidelines established by the League Board of Directors and provide a health and grooming service for animals at the time of their admittance or adoption. The Board establishes all adoption, fostering, and rescue criteria. Contracts must be signed and the fees that are set by the Board paid;

Educating the public and school students about responsible pet ownership and their humane care as well as increase public awareness of animal rights and humane treatment;

 Assist the public in obtaining low cost spay/neuter;. Insure that any animal for which it is impossible to find a proper home is euthanized in a humane manner;

 Raise, hold, and manage funds by any practical means to support the programs of the League in accordance with best practices and legal requirements;

Provide for adoption/companionship of animals only; restricted from being sold or given away for research or experimentation or to any animal dealer.

In 2006 the Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc., which had grown to an organization of approximately 140 members in less than 18 months, was the 2006 Recipient of the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in North Carolina. In 2007 they were the recipient of the Award for Non-Profit Organization of the Year in Currituck County.
