Sam finds his Forever Home
Sam finds his Forever Home |
The boys were named after Sam & Omie's Restaurant.
Unfortunately, the Lady who ordered and purchased these brothers was unable to care for them and turned them over, not long after arrival, to Animal Control Officer JM Eakes at the Hyde County Animal Shelter.
On November 1st, 2007 Sam found his forever home with Preacher Charlie & wife Florence. Sam now happy lives in Engelhard, NC.
Sam also has 3 neutered cats in his family, that he loves to give kisses too or a bath, we're not sure which.
Sam's brother Omie also found his forever home and now lives happily on Hatteras Island.
Sam & Omie were among the very first adoptions at the Hyde County Animal Shelter established August 1st, 2007.

Currituck County’s New Animal Shelter Plans make Front Page News
![]() |
Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc |
Ginger Sikes, President of the Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc., operators of the Currituck County Animal Shelter, recently presented new plans to County Commissioners to provide Currituck County with a New 21st Century Animal Shelter.
These plans made front page news in the Daily Advance newspaper.
Ginger Sikes stated:
“We made a big presentation to our County Commissioners on Monday re: new shelter. There's an article on 12/18 with a picture of the new shelter on the front page, top headline in the Daily Advance.
It's a good article but misquotes me. I said that it would be one of the best shelters in surrounding counties, not the best in the country! And we've worked on this for 2 yrs., not a couple of weeks.”

Let’s Keep Our Pets Safe, Happy and Healthy This Holiday Season!
I would like to extend warm wishes to everyone on the Outer Banks this holiday season. As we celebrate with family and friends, let’s be sure to keep some important safety tips in mind for our furry family members. One way to be sure our pets have an enjoyable season is to do our best to eliminate potential hazards.
Plants
Poinsettias, Holly, Mistletoe and Christmas trees set the tone for our holiday decorations, but we must be sure to keep these out of reach of pets. Poinsettias, although not as poisonous as once thought, can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach leading to vomiting. Holly berries contain toxins called saponins, which leads to vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. Be sure to keep mistletoe up where it belongs and out of reach of pets. It has many different varieties, but all are toxic to pets. Mistletoe can cause vomiting, liver failure or seizures depending on the variety.
Ever wonder why cat collars have a quick release? Christmas trees come to my mind! Cats love to climb these green jungle gyms, and their collars can get hung up on branches. It is best to keep cats and dogs away from the Christmas tree unless supervised. Other hazards include chewing and/or swallowing ornaments and drinking the water under the tree.
Often times insecticides, preservatives and fire-retardant chemicals sit in the water feeding your Christmas tree. It is important to keep pets away from the tree either by using baby gates or closed doors unless supervised.
Electric Cords
Extension cords are used much more often this season and can be attractive to teething puppies or playful cats. Be sure to keep all extension cords unplugged or out of reach when pets cannot be supervised.
Ribbons and Tinsel
Strings and ribbons are often some of our cat’s favorite toys, but they can be dangerous if swallowed. The material can obstruct or slice through the gastrointestinal tract causing serious consequences. It is important to keep these decorations out of reach of our pets.
Holiday Food
It is often tempting to feed Fluffy or Fido bits of the holiday meal, but feeding pets foods that they are not used to eating can cause serious stomach upset or pancreatitis. It is also important to not feed leftover bones to pets due to the fact that they can lacerate or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract.
Some foods that are toxic to pets include chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes. This is not a complete list but is just a few of the foods pets have access to over the holidays.
Guests / Holiday Parties
Be sure that all pets have a safe, quiet place of their own during holiday get-togethers. These times are often very stressful for pets and can lead to behavior issues if they can’t get away from the commotion. It is also a good idea to keep your pet in a safe place during parties as it can be easy for them to run away with guests coming and going.
Even when all of the proper precautions are taken, accidents can still happen. Please do not hesitate to call one of the veterinarians on the Outer Banks if you have any questions or concerns about your pet.
Happy Holidays!

NC State University Mobile Veterinary Unit visits Hyde County NC
NC State University Mobile Veterinary Unit visits Hyde County, NC |
Hyde Country has no veterinary services and did not have an Animal Shelter or Animal Control until Aug. 1st 2007. Now Animal Control Officer JM Eakes runs the Hyde County Animal Shelter.
Since 1997 NC State University Mobile Veterinary Unit has provided valuable veterinary services to Hyde County, for a one week period in November of each year that coincides with the open Bear Hunting Season.
The NC State University Mobile Veterinary Unit was staffed by Kelli Ferris, Clinical Assistant Professor College of Veterinary Medicine, one Certified Veterinary Technician & (6) Six fourth year NC State University Veterinary Students.
In addition to being a Veterinary Emergency Unit for the Dogs injured during hunting the NC State University Mobile Veterinary Unit provided regular veterinary service to Hyde County residents.
Services included 40 regular check-ups, wellness care & annual Rabies and Vaccination shots. There were 11 spay & neuters, 3 county resident emergencies that included a dog with a broken tail, a dog with an abscess between the eyes, and a dog with a broken toe due to a lawn mower accident. There was also a horse with EIA Equestrian Infectious Anemia. There were 5 dogs treated due to dog fights while hunting & 38 Emergency Care treatments for dogs injured during the hunt.
Blog Photo is of Ellen Sawyer, 4th year NC State University Veterinary Student & Gimpy, a Bear Hunting Dog owned by Darryl Hopkins of Columbia, NC.
Photography by Carol at Seaside Photography
There is feature article about Gimpy in todays Sunday edition of the Fayetteville Observer "Bear Season: Mobile animal hospital comes to dog's rescue" by Todd M. Adams, Sports Editor
Bear hunting maybe a controversial subject but Hyde County depends on the revenue generated each year from this annual event that draws hunters from around the world.
This Annual Event not only provides valuable veterinary service to Hyde County but provides the future NC State Veterinarians with valuable emergency experience to provide top notch veterinary care for the animals of North Carolina.

Giving a pet as a Holiday gift? Outer Banks SPCA

Winter Holiday’s are a wonderful time of the year for people. The visits from friends and family, decorating the tree, last minute shopping and bustle of the holidays in general combine to get everyone in the holiday spirit. It is after all, the season to be merry!
Introducing a new animal into a household during the turbulent holiday season is an invitation for trouble. Homes are decorated with poisonous plants, lit candles, electrical cords and fragile ornaments, all of which are definitely not pet friendly. In addition, routines are set aside in favor of rounds of parties, visiting relatives, doors being left open as people come and go, candy and goodies.
To a new pet arriving in a household during the holidays, away from its litter mates for the first time, surrounded by strangers, noise and confusion, the excitement and cheer will be strange and frightening, causing a young animal to become quite confused and scared. And, is there really time for housebreaking a new puppy? In most households, the answer would be “no’.
The acquisition of an animal companion, young or old, should be thought out carefully by the person who will accept the responsibility of guardianship. Unless you play an integral role within the family, you won’t know what kind of animal would fit in best with the family’s daily routine.
With some forethought and a sincere commitment, pets can be a wonderful gift to give your family or friends. A family meeting should be held so that all members can openly express their likes and dislikes regarding pets. In addition, discussing who will take on what chores ahead of time and when will make things easier and help to guarantee the successful integration of a new pet in the household.
The holidays are simply not a good time to give an animal as a gift.
If you truly have your heart set on sharing the gift of love by giving a companion animal this holiday season think about putting a substitute plush toy, pet care book, or a homemade gift certificate under the tree. Once the holiday chaos is over, you can escort the family to the Outer Banks SPCA-Dare County Animal Shelter to select their furr-ever friend.

Coastal Humane Society |
The Coastal Humane Society is a private, all-volunteer, non-profit organization working on the Outer Banks of NC to ensure all animals are cared for and no owner or caretaker is forced to give up a pet because of (medical) financial hardship.
The Society helps pay for low-cost pet spays & neuter, vaccinations & emergency medical bills.
The Coastal Humane Society has helped more than 3,500 animals, owners & caregivers, in Dare County & Lower Currituck County since 1997.
With the downturn in the economy, they are receiving more request for help than ever before.

Floyd was chosen by the Outer Banks SPCA to grace the cover of the very first Outer Banks SPCA Outer Banks Pet Calendar, which will be available at area retailers during the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Floyd was professionally photographed by Walter V. Gresham III Photography. Floyd passed away on November 7th, 2008 and he will be greatly missed by his forever home. He had so much love to share. Floyd will live forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
